The Challenge
AMC needed companion content to expand The Walking Dead universe beyond the main series. The goal was to create an engaging backstory for one of the show’s most recognizable props—the red machete—while maintaining the dark, apocalyptic tone fans expected.
The Solution
TADApix created an animated origin story tracking the red machete’s journey through different hands across the zombie apocalypse. The 2D animation style allowed for stylized violence and creative storytelling that complemented the live-action series while standing on its own as digital content.
Creative Approach
The animation follows the machete as it passes between survivors, each sequence revealing how this simple tool became a symbol of survival in the post-apocalyptic world. The visual style balances the show’s gritty realism with animated storytelling techniques.
Visual Style
Dark, atmospheric 2D animation with a limited color palette dominated by grays and the signature red of the machete. The style evokes graphic novel aesthetics while maintaining The Walking Dead’s visual identity.
Impact
This piece demonstrated TADApix’s ability to create branded entertainment content for major networks, working within established fictional universes while adding new narrative layers. The animation served as digital marketing content that engaged the show’s dedicated fanbase.
