The Challenge
Microsoft needed to introduce MSN Offers for Schools—a digital fundraising platform connecting local businesses with underfunded schools. The solution had to be memorable, engaging, and explain a complex three-way value exchange (businesses, schools, and community members) in an entertaining way.
The Solution
TADApix created a full-scale musical theater production in animated form. The video tells the story of a poorly funded school struggling to put on a play, using humor and music to introduce the fundraising solution.
This was one of TADApix’s first major projects—a creative showcase that helped establish the studio’s reputation for ambitious, unconventional explainer videos.
Creative Highlights
- Broadway-caliber talent: Professional musical theater singers brought theatrical energy and vocal power
- Children’s choir: A full chorus of young voices added authenticity and emotional impact
- Original score: Music composed by Patrick Kirst, Sam’s friend from USC film school, with full orchestral backing
- Technical innovation: Elaborate 3D camera moves in After Effects created cinematic depth and visual dynamism
- Theatrical storytelling: Musical theater conventions (character songs, ensemble numbers, comedic timing) made complex information entertaining
Visual Style
Bright, colorful, retro-style 2D animation with expressive character designs and stylized environments. The playful aesthetic complemented the theatrical tone while maintaining professional clarity.
How It Works
MSN Offers for Schools created a win-win-win fundraising model:
- Local businesses create special deals to attract new customers
- Schools promote the deals to their community
- Community members buy deals from local businesses
- Microsoft matches a percentage of funds to support participating schools
- Everyone benefits: businesses gain customers, schools get funding, communities support local commerce
Impact
This project demonstrated TADApix’s ability to handle complex productions requiring multi-voice casting, original music composition, advanced After Effects animation, and humorous storytelling for serious topics. The musical theater approach made a fundraising platform memorable—turning a dry explainer into an entertainment experience.
